Summary

Description of the first year of the Computer Science Master

Présentation to the students

This year is devoted to the strengthening of the bases in computer science. Compared to the L3, it aims at offer diversified topics.

The programme includes:

  • Optionnal classes (mainly at the first semester) attended at MPRI or in other masters in Parisian area. The individual programmes must be validated by the department.
  • an internship (at the second semester)

This programme also includes visits of laboratories and conferences introducting research topics.

Like in L3, the two main options are computer science and joint computer science-mathematics, proposed by the two departements. The second option is often chosen in view of agrégation of mathématics, option computer science. Other options are possible.

The two options of internships

  1. Long internship
    • A semester of classes
    • An internship abroad except for students coming from abroad
      • lasting 5 months between the start of February and the end of August.
      • choice of the destination: between October and December (with the tutor).
  2. Short internship
    • A semester of classes
    • Additional classes at the second semester
    • An internship abroad except for students coming from abroad
      • lasting 2 and half months between the start of June and the end of August.
      • choice of the destination: between January and March (with the tutor).

Recommended classes

A programme must include M1 classes of ENS Cachan among:
  • Introduction to verification
  • Tree automata
  • Rewriting techniques
  • Advanced complexity
  • Networks
  • Algorithmics et bioinformatics
  • Probabilistic features of computer science
  • Software Engineering
  • Initiation to research
A programme may include M1 classes of ENS Paris among:
  • Introduction to artificial vision
  • Moving planification in robotics
  • Categories and lambda calcul
  • Statistical learning
Some classes of other masters may complete the programme like: For students with a short internship, the additional classes may be chosen among the L3 classes of the second semester and/or M1 classes of mathematics of departement Mathematiques at ENS Cachan and/or :

Validation of the year

For students with a long internship (which counts for 30 credits), the students must validate 30 credits including 24 credits in computer science.

For students with a short internship (which counts for 15 credits), the students must validate 45 credits including 30 credits in computer science.
